Apple invitations just landed in media inboxes for an event on Oct. 23, which many expect will bring news of a smaller iPad.
Apple’s teaser line on the invite — “We’ve got a little more to show you.” — could be a wink toward confirming rumors of a so-called iPad mini, which reports say may have a 7.85-inch screen. Recent speculation also has it that Apple may be planning to unveil a new Mac mini at the same event, 9 to 5 Mac reported, which would make it a very big day for small Apple devices. The new Mac minis, the report said, will come in two new configurations with different options for storage and processors.
The event news comes as Microsoft officially announced the price of its Surface tablet, which will compete with the iPad in the tablet market this season. The Surface will cost $499 — the same as the iPad — but its base model will come with 32GB of memory, vs. the iPad’s 16 GB.
The Surface, however, would not be a direct competitor for the iPad mini, which would be taking on competition in the smaller tablet market currently occupied by Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7. The smaller iPads are expected to have the company’s new Lightning 8-pin connector as well as the A5 chip currently running the iPad 2. They are not expected to have the retina-quality displays of the new iPad.
Apple’s event next week will take place at the California Theater in San Jose, Calif. and will start at 9 a.m.
